Coal which is mostly carbon generates 50% of all electricity in US and it has the highest carbon content of any fossil fuel. Actually, one of the best fuels is methane. It has a lot less carbon. The problem is that added CO2 levels will acidify the ocean and cause global warming which could melt the polar ice caps.
That long slow coal train going to the power plant will soon be part of ancient history is we start to tax carbon emitters. In its place we could see solar and wind power.
